Urban Osby, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2006) of the Karolinska Institute, will search for genes that predispose certain individuals with schizophrenia to commit suicide. To find those genes, Dr. Osby will use a Swedish registry of 15,005 deceased patients with schizophrenia who have been autopsied and from whom DNA was collected. In the study, he will compare 500 schizophrenia patients who have died from suicide, 500 schizophrenia patients who have died from cancer, and 500 healthy blood donors from Stockholm County. Phenotypic information will be based on forensic and pathology records, psychiatric records about diagnosis, and records of psychiatric diagnoses and suicides of first-degree relatives. Finding genetic risks for suicide in schizophrenia could have great clinical importance. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
