Patrick S. Page-McCaw, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of University of California, San Francisco, will attempt to identify the genetic mutations that affect a phenomenon called “habituation” in zebrafish. Habituation is the decline in behavioral response upon repeated presentation of a stimulus. Patients with schizophrenia have abnormal habituation. Dr. Page-McCaw proposes to identify mutations in zebrafish that affect habituation. Mutant genes identified in this screen will be candidate schizophrenia-susceptibility genes. This work may result in important new insights into the genetic basis of schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
