Abraham A. Palmer, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Columbia University, is examining gene expression in normal mice, mice that fail to make a particular serotonin receptor, and mice that make too much of the neuropeptide Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). Both of these mutant mice show increases in behaviors that are believed to model anxiety, which is a common feature in depressed patients. By comparing changes in gene expression between normal and mutant mice, he hopes to identify genes that are critically involved in the response to antidepressants.
