Michael V. Pantalon, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2006) of the Connecticut Mental Health Center/Yale University, will study two psychosocial interventions designed to help women with postpartum depression take medication to treat their condition. Dr. Pantalon will randomly assign 60 stable bipolar women who gave birth within the past six months to eight weekly, 30-minute individual sessions of either Motivational Adherence Enhancement or psychoeducation. The primary outcome measure is the proportion of correct medication doses taken, based on information from a MEMS medication bottle cap, which has a microcomputer in it that records the date and time of each opening. Secondary outcomes include self-reporting of adherence, pill counts, and changes in symptoms of depression and mania. All assessments will be administered weekly and at one and three months post-treatment. Dr. Pantalon hypothesizes that Motivational Adherence Enhancement will lead to significantly greater rates of medication adherence and lower mood symptoms compared to psychoeducation. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar\Postpartum |
