June-Hee Park, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2008) of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, will determine whether electroconvulsive shock (ECS) affects the structure of newborn neurons, pre-existing neurons, and neuronal progenitor in the adult brain. Dr. Park will use innovative animal models to visualize these cells in the adult brain and to determine the ECS-induced changes in the processes, dendrites, and spines of cells in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. These experiments will provide a comprehensive view on how ECS affects the neuronal structure and may guide us towards developing new therapies for depression.
