Ramin Vaziri Parsey, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Columbia University, is conducting a positron emission tomography (PET) study of the serotonin transporter in patients with depression. The serotonin transporter is the protein responsible for the uptake of serotonin and hence the termination of its activity. Dr. Parsey's group has developed a special chemical that allows quantification of the serotonin transporter in the brain. The serotonin transporter will be compared between patients with depression and healthy controls. This study may enhance our knowledge of the causes of depression, because abnormalities of serotonin have been demonstrated in this disorder. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
