Sanjeev Pathak, M.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the Children's Hospital Medical Center/University of Cincinnati, seeks to develop a means by which fluoxetine can be administered more effectively to adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD). The first line of pharmacological intervention in adolescents with MDD, fluoxetine is usually started at a low dose and gradually increased. This necessitates careful monitoring of patients and often causes delays in arriving at an effective antidepressant dose. Flexible dose clinical trials and clinical data suggest that high final doses are frequently used. By individualizing dosage based on patient genotype, Dr. Pathak hopes to enable patients to reach target doses more rapidly, which would constitute a significant advance in their clinical care.
