Julie V. Patterson, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of University of California, Irvine, will investigate whether individuals with bipolar disorder show a deficit in sensory gating similar to that in schizophrenia and whether the results differ as a function of episode (e.g., mania, depression, mixed). Dr. Patterson will also attempt to determine if sensory gating measures and habituation predict symptom severity and performance on neuropsychological tests measuring attention, vigilance and working memory. Her research will contribute to the understanding of the gating deficit, as well as possibly contribute information compatible with a shared fundamental defect in the biological substrate of the two disorders. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
