Arturas Petronis, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Centre For Addiction and Mental Health, will investigate the regulation of the gene for the serotonin 2 A receptor, and compare the regulation of this gene between patients with schizophrenia and unaffected subjects. It is believed that so-called epigenetic factors, which regulate gene activity by chemical changes in DNA, may play an important role in schizophrenia. This research may help explain a number of discrepant results in genetic studies of schizophrenia, and may also elucidate why only certain patients show improvement on Clozapine, which blocks the serotonin 2A receptor. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
