Craig M. Powell, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, proposes to examine the role of three proteins in a genetically manipulated animal model of schizophrenia. Mice in which these proteins have been removed or altered in order to create abnormal schizophrenia-like behaviors will be tested. Dr. Powell is testing the hypothesis that abnormal signaling between neurons occurs between neurons at points of communication called synapses. In fact, some molecules found at synapses are decreased in the brain of schizophrenia patients. These studies may lead to a novel genetic model of aspects of schizophrenia.
