Jens C. Pruessner, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Douglas Hospital Research Centre, will examine the connection between dysregulation of the HPA (stress hormone) system and the volume of frontal lobe structures. There is strong evidence that abnormalities of the HPA axis play a role in major depression, and these anomalies may be associated with alterations in structure of the frontal lobe. Dr. Pruessner will measure stress hormones in saliva samples of patients with depression, and relate these levels to volume of frontal lobe brain structures, and to neuropsychological data. This work may help further elucidate the mechanisms by which abnormalities of the HPA axis contribute to depression. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
