Sridhar Raghavachari, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Brandeis University, aims to study the role of the NMDA receptor (a receptor that binds glutamate) and its intrinsic properties in driving fluctuations in activity of neurons. According to the hypothesis, such fluctuations occur in two states and allow the neuron to flexibly bind context with information. Abnormalities in response based on context have been demonstrated in schizophrenia, and the nucleus accumbens, a brain small brain structure that is one of the main targets for dopamine neurons, appears to select goal-directed behavior that is contextually appropriate. This will be the first study that connects the physiology of cognitive deficits dependent upon the nucleus accumbens to molecular deficits believed to underlie schizophrenia.
