Donald Gordon Rainnie, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Emory University, is testing the hypothesis that negative symptoms of schizophrenia are associated with abnormally high inhibition of a brain structure called the amygdala. This abnormality is proposed to be secondary to abnormal function of the serotonin receptor. Clozapine, a medication which appears to improve negative symptoms, blocks the serotonin type 2A (5HT-2A) receptor. Dr. Rainnie will examine whether chronic clozapine treatment acts by lowering the response of amygdala neurons to serotonin application by lowering 5HT-2A receptor expression.
