Elizabeth Ralevski, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Yale University, is investigating the use of mecamylamine (MEC) as an augmenting agent for the treatment of patients diagnosed with both depression and alcohol dependence. Noting that that medications that block presynaptic nAChR may be effective in the treatment of alcoholism and depression, she hypothesizes that MEC will significantly reduce depressive symptoms and decrease alcohol consumption compared to placebo in patients with depression and alcohol dependence who are on a stable dose of an SSRI. Positive results will mark an advance in the clinical care of those being treated for both conditions. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Mood Disorders (General)\Alcoholism |
