Yuri Rassovsky, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2008) of University of California, Los Angeles, proposes to examine the spatial and temporal characteristics of affect perception in schizophrenia. Spatial characteristics will be examined by manipulating the spatial frequency of the face stimuli, whereas the temporal characteristics will be studied by applying single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (which temporarily interferes with visual perception) to visual cortical area. By comparing the ability to identify affect on facial stimuli between individuals with schizophrenia and controls, within this experimental paradigm, we hope to better understand the underlying mechanism of affect perception deficits in schizophrenia. A better understanding of these mechanisms would facilitate the development of effective pharmacological interventions. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
