James L. Reilly, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the University of Illinois, Chicago, is studying aspects of working memory (WM) affected in schizophrenia and how these are affected by antipsychotic treatments. He also seeks to discover whether aspects of WM are similarly affected across other psychotic disorders, such as bipolar disorder with psychosis. Following on his previous work, he hopes to characterize the regional brain changes associated with component attentional and maintenance WM operations in treatment-naïve first-episode schizophrenia and psychotic bipolar disorder patients before and after treatment with an atypical antipsychotic. Findings from this study will contribute to a better understanding of how atypical antipsychotics affect brain functioning needed for these cognitive operations across diagnostic groups and will be relevant for development of interventions targeting cognitive symptoms in psychotic disorders. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS |
