Alon Reshef, M.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Sarah Herzog Memorial Hospital, will develop a smoking cessation treatment approach for schizophrenia patients which is tailored to a subject's unique genetic makeup, based upon individual reactivity to medications. Participants with schizophrenia will be selected based upon their motivation to stop smoking and treated with either bupropion (an antidepressant that has proven efficacy for smoking cessation), or placebo. Genetic information from each patient will be obtained regarding candidate genes that are hypothesized to partially mediate smoking cessation. Responses to treatment will be analyzed, taking into consideration treatment modality, genetic constitution and other variables such as type of anti-psychotic medication. Dr. Reshef expects that these findings will eventually allow clinicians to tailor smoking cessation treatments to a patient's unique genetic constitution. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia\Nicotine\Pharmacology |
