Gal Richter-Levin, Ph.D. (Independent Investigator 2002) of University of Haifa, will explore whether abnormal GABAergic neurotransmission underlies the effects of early adverse experiences as cognitive and emotional abilities in adulthood (research indicates children exposed to early adverse experiences are at an increased risk for developing affective disorders, particularly depression and anxiety). A GABA deficit may be involved in mood disorders and increasing GABAergic neurotransmission may exert antidepressant effects. Using a newly developed model, Dr. Richter-Levin will examine the neurobiological substrates of cognitive and emotional alterations in adulthood precipitated by an early life stressful experience by using behavioral, electrophysiological and biochemical and imaging tools to determine if these experiences affect these abilities by altering GABAergic neurotransmission. The project could contribute significantly to the understanding of the neurophysiology of affective disorders and to the ability to develop new treatments for these diseases. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS AREAS\Anxiety Disorders/Unipolar Depression |
