Eric Rubin, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of New York State Psychiatric Institute, will examine the relationship between the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and cerebral metabolism in the prefrontal cortex of the brain in patients with depression. Abnormalities of GABA function have been implicated in depression, and prefrontal cortical activity is also proposed to be disturbed in this illness. Dr. Rubin will use positron emission tomography (PET) to measure metabolic rate in the prefrontal cortex, as well as magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to quantify levels of GABA. The relationship between GABA levels and brain metabolic rate will be investigated in depressed patients and controls. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
