Paola Salvatore, M.D. (Young Investigator 2006) of McLean Hospital/Harvard University, plans to evaluate the psychopathological aspects of a psychotic episode, before, during, and following the event, to better define the evolution of such syndromes. Dr. Salvatore also will compare the diagnostic utility of dimensional vs. categorical approaches to psychopathology with respect to family history, premorbid adjustment, ages at onset of first symptoms and initial syndromal illness, and treatment response, course, and long-term outcome. Subjects are 200 intensively evaluated psychotic patients with nonaffective (n=90 with SCID-DSM-IV diagnoses of schizophrenia, schizophreniform, brief psychotic, or delusional disorders, or psychosis not otherwise specified) and major affective disorders (n=110 with bipolar I or major depressive disorder), followed prospectively from first episodes of psychotic illness for at least two years. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS\Mood Disorders/Schizophrenia |
