Gerard Sanacora, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Connecticut Mental Health Center, will determine whether concentrations of the neurotransmitter GABA can be reliably used to differentiate patients with various subtypes of depression. A technique called magnetic resonance spectroscopy will be used to quantify GABA levels in the cortex of the brain. This will extend previous work on GABA abnormalities in depression. The findings of this study may have a significant impact on our understanding of the brain pathophysiology related to mood disorders. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
