Samuel N. Sathyanesan, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Connecticut Mental Health Center, will examine growth factor genes in the hippocampus of rats treated with antidepressant medications. Previous work has shown that these medications increase expression of several of these growth factors in this brain. In this study, a chip will be used which contains all of the known growth factors, their receptors, downstream target genes, and genes that respond antidepressant medications. This chip will identify these genes in the hippocampus of rats treated with antidepressants. This work may lead to the identification of new targets for the development of new antidepressants.
