Akira Sawa, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of Johns Hopkins University, is interested in the regulatory mechanisms of serine racemase (SR), an enzyme that produces D-serine (which when administered with classical neuroleptics ameliorates symptoms of schizophrenic patients), and picked PICK1 as an interactor of SR. The PICK1 gene is located on 22q11-13, which has been suggested as a genetic locus of schizophrenia. Studies of PICK1 in the regulation of SR and D-serine may lead to novel therapeutic targets for schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
