Laura Schrader, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Baylor College of Medicine, will examine the means by which serotonin and dopamine acutely modulate the activity of neurons and networks in the brain. For this purpose, molecular and functional changes will be explored in a specific ion channel involved in regulation of nerve cell excitability. In addition, the cascade of molecular events that involve coupling of receptors and long-term changes in gene expression will be investigated. This work will help to further elucidate the highly intricate and diverse mechanisms relating to serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters implicated in schizophrenia, depression, and other psychiatric disorders.
