David A. Shapiro, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Case Western Reserve University, is examining the role of phosphorylation (addition of a phosphate group) of the serotonin type 2A (5HT-2A) receptor in a process called signal transduction, in which electrical signals are transferred to and from the nerve cell. First, Dr. Shapiro will develop antibodies specific to sites of phosphorylation on this receptor. Second, the receptor phosphorylation state will be examined after treatment with medications, such as atypical antipsychotics. These studies could provide new insights into treatment strategies for schizophrenia and depression. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
