Janine M. Simmons, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, is studying the functional neuroanatomy of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and hypothesizes that abnormalities in basal ganglia function may underlie the illness. Specifically, she has proposed that disordered activity in closed-loop circuits that link the basal ganglia with anterior cingulate and/or orbitofrontal cortex may result in OCD symptoms. She hopes to produce a circuit diagram to guide future investigations of the neural basis of OCD, and eventually to improved treatments for OCD Program Area: ANXIETY DISORDERS\Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) |
