David J. Speca, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Ernest Gallo Clinic & Research Center, points out that defects in the transmission of dopamine have been implicated in many neurological disorders, including schizophrenia, ADHD, Parkinson's and drug addiction. Dr. Speca has performed genetic screens of mice to identify genes that regulate dopamine's transmission, and has identified one mutant line that is heritable. In this project Dr. Speca will clone this mutation to identify the altered gene. Additionally, he will perform behavioral tests to better understand the role of this mutated gene in normal mice and in mouse models of neurological diseases.
