Per Svenningsson, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Karolinska Institute, is exploring the molecular mechanisms that govern serotonin receptor signaling in the neurobiology of mood disorders. Many of the current treatments for depression and anxiety act by increasing serotonin transmission in the brain, which initiates cellular adaptations that ultimately lead to therapeutic action. A better understanding of serotonin receptor signaling is therefore needed to provide the neurobiological foundation on which rationale design of novel antidepressants and anti-anxiety treatments rely.
