Gilles D. Tamagnan, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Yale University School of Medicine, is developing a chemical used to tag the serotonin transporter (SERT). The SERT is a protein located on nerve cells in the brain that removes serotonin from the synapse, the space between the nerve cells. Previous studies suggest that the SERT is diminished in patients with major depression. In this study, chemicals that bind to the receptor will be synthesized, and those with the best affinity and selectivity for the SERT will be studied in primates. This work may lead to a study of patients with major depression. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
