Janet L. Tekell, M.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, will study gamma waves, which are fast frequency brain waves whose fluctuations may be related to attention and memory. Gamma abnormalities may result in a variety of cognitive and perceptual distortions that are characteristic of schizophrenia. Dr. Tekell proposes to explore the characteristics of gamma fluctuations in patients with schizophrenia and normal control subjects in order to clarify the relationship between gamma power, treatment, and symptom reduction in schizophrenia. She will also examine the correlation of gamma to attention and memory and compare how gamma differs between patients and normal controls. This work may lead to the identification of gamma as a physiological index of symptom severity and treatment response. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
