Catherine C. Thompson, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Kennedy Krieger Institute, is identifying regions of the brain in which genes are activated by thyroid hormone. Numerous studies have linked thyroid hormone deficiency to depression. This will be accomplished using mice that carry a genetically engineered gene, which is activated only in the presence of thyroid hormone. This will permit the discovery of where in the brain thyroid hormone-responsive genes are turned on. These sites will then become the focus of further studies to identify specific genes that are regulated by thyroid hormone, and test the effect of antidepressant medications on these genes. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Unipolar/Bipolar |
