Nehal P. Vadhan, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2008) of New York State Psychiatric Institute/Columbia University, proposes to examine the acute subjective and neurocognitive effects of smoked marijuana on individuals in the prodromal phase of a psychotic disorder. While the direct effects of Delta 9 - tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta 9-THC), the primary psychoactive component of marijuana, have been explored in individuals with fully-developed schizophrenia, the effects of smoked marijuana on individuals with prodromal psychosis have not. By examining the acute subjective and neurocognitive effects of smoked marijuana in individuals at-risk for full psychosis, this study will provide experimental data to inform the debate over marijuana’s role in the precipitation of psychotic disorders.
