Peter M. Vassilev, M.D. (Young Investigator 2004) of Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard University, plans on investigating the role of a calcium ion sensing receptor (CaR), which may interact with other receptors and channels that are dysfunctional in psychoses. Dr. Vassilev’s laboratory recently cloned the CaR and found that activators of it elicit beneficial effects on neuronal excitability and neurotransmission. In the proposed study, Dr. Vassilev will use CaR activators to correct disturbances in schizophrenia and related affective disorders. He also will evaluate the synergistic actions of the CaR activators and other antipsychotic pharmacological agents. These studies should provide new insights into the pathogenesis and treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Application of CaR potentiators and their synergistic actions with other antipsychotic drugs could lead to new therapeutic strategies. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Psychotic Major Depression |
