Diane Warden, Ph.D., M.B.A. (Young Investigator 2007) of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, plans to investigate the predictors of attrition in clinical research for patients with major depressive disorder. Dr. Warden’s study is valuable because if consistent sociodemographic or clinical characteristics could be identified that are associated with attrition, patients with these characteristics can be targeted for interventions to reduce attrition in treatment or clinical trials. In addition, if particular clinical procedures or characteristics of clinicians and support personnel can be identified that are associated with reduced attrition, this could make an important contribution to both clinical practice and the conduct of clinical trials.
