Pieter Joost van Wattum, M.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Yale Child Study Center, will assess the effectiveness of pharmacological and cognitive behavioral treatment in children with Major Depression and Type 1 Diabetes by administering citalopram and cognitive behavioral treatment. The study will also investigate whether (1) improvement of depressive symptoms is associated with improved diabetic control, and (2) whether Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase (GAD), an enzyme needed for production of the neurotransmitter Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA), antibodies and the cerebrospinal fluid GABA levels are markers in depression and Type 1 Diabetes.
