Baldwin M. Way, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the University of California, Los Angeles, will use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study how the polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) and early family stress influence activity within a particular brain structure, the amygdala. It is hoped that studying the neural interaction of nature and nurture will yield new insights into the etiology of depression that can be used to better identify individuals at the highest risk for depression.
