Anthony P. Weiss, M.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Massachusetts General Hospital, will study the function of the hippocampus in first-degree relatives of patients with schizophrenia. Positron emission tomography (PET) will be used to study cerebral activity and memory function in these relatives. MRI will also be performed on the medial temporal lobe to assess the volume and structural integrity of the hippocampus. This study will allow determination of whether functional abnormalities in the hippocampus are limited to schizophrenia, or also is present in first-degree relatives, suggesting a shared genetic determinant. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
