Jeffrey A. Welge, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2005) of the University of Cincinnati, plans to study the effectiveness of psychological assessment scales to measure changes in symptoms of major mental disorders. In the proposed study Dr. Welge will use databases of patients with schizophrenia (N=768) and bipolar mania (N=500-800) who participated in recent clinical trials to measure detection thresholds for three widely used symptom severity scales (YMRS, BPRS, and PANSS). Psychometric assessment of changes on individual items will be performed to assess the validity of conventional scoring rules and to suggest refinements. Psychometric analyses will also be used to determine whether perceived change in symptoms that occur in both mania and schizophrenia (e.g., symptoms of psychosis) contributes differently to perceived global change in these conditions. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS AREAS\Bipolar Disorder/Schizophrenia |
