Sylvain Williams, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Douglas Hospital Research Centre, will use animal models to study how infection during pregnancy affects brain development. Studies show that a person has an increased risk for developing schizophrenia if his/her mother had an infection, such as influenza, measles or pneumonia during pregnancy. Neurodevelopmental abnormalities in brain regions such as the hippocampus may contribute to the dysfunctions and symptoms of schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
