Tony T. Yang, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of University of California, San Diego, notes that adolescent depression is a frequent and recurrent disorder that tends to continue into adulthood with increasingly damaging results, such as poor psychosocial and academic outcome, substance abuse, and increased risk of suicide. Dr. Yang will use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to non-invasively examine how the brain of a depressed adolescent is differs from that of a non-depressed adolescent, and how the adolescent brain changes following effective treatment for depression. The results of this study will help us to design new therapeutic interventions for adolescent depression. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar)\Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)\Child/Adolescent |
