Shawn Hayley, Ph.D.
Young Investigator
Dr. Hayley received his doctorate in 2002 from Carleton University, in the Department of Psychology, under the mentorship of Hymie Anisman. His doctoral research received the Governor General’s Medal, and he was subsequently awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) which was taken up at the Neuroscience Research Institute, University of Ottawa. He is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, Carleton University, and holds a Canadian Research Chair, a highly prestigious award given to the most promising young scientists in an effort to maintain a cadre of innovative and productive scientists within Canada. In addition, Dr. Hayley has secured and currently holds considerable external funding for his research through NSERC and CIHR (comparable to NIH and NSF in the USA), and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. He also was recently awarded a highly prestigious early (research) career award (Premiers Research Excellence Award), along with his NARSAD Young Investigators award on cytokines in depression and Parkinsonism.
Dr. Hayley’s past and current research has been invested heavily in understanding the role of proinflammatory cytokines in behaviorally relevant pathology, in particular depression and Parkinson’s disease. Over a short postdoctoral period, Dr. Hayley has published 27 peer-reviewed articles and 6 book chapters, including publications in high profile journals, such as J. Neurosci., PNAS and European J. Neurosci. He also served as a guest editor for an issue in Current Pharmaceutical Design on the role of cytokines in psychiatric and neurodegenerative states.
