Ari Zaretsky, M.D., FRCP (C) (Young Investigator 2001) of University of Toronto, will test the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for bipolar disorder. CBT is a structured psychological intervention that emphasizes training in emotional problem-solving skills to help the individual cope with distressing emotions. The study will involve 120 bipolar patients who will be administered CBT or a psychoeducational control condition. All subjects will be followed for 18 months following completion of the treatment. It is hypothesized that CBT treated individuals will experience less mood symptoms, stay well for a longer period of time, and use less medical and mental health services compared to the control group. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
