Jian-Min Zhang, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2008) of the University of Maryland, notes that hypogonadism is a deficiency in gonadal hormone, testosterone. By age 55, 30 % of men are hypogonadal. Hypogonadal men are three-times more likely to suffer from depression, and are more likely to become antidepressant treatment-resistant. Testosterone may alleviate depression symptoms but has not yet emerged as a routine treatment due to inconsistent findings. Dr. Zhang believes this is because the functional status of androgen receptors (AR) has never been considered. The goal of this study is to determine whether AR genotypes may be used as genetic markers to determine who will benefit from testosterone in hypogonadal men.
