Zhong-Wei Zhang, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Laval University, will examine physiological and pharmacological properties of serotonin receptors in the prefrontal cortex of rats. Previous evidence suggests that serotonin may have a prominent role in mental disorders including depression and schizophrenia. It is hypothesized that serotonin may be particularly important in the regulation of a specific class of GABA interneurons. This study may contribute significantly to our understanding of the function of the brain serotonin system, which is of importance to elucidating the biochemical underpinnings of major psychiatric disorders in which serotonergic abnormalities are thought to play a role. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
