Fu-Ming Zhou, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Baylor College of Medicine, will examine the serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine (DA) systems which interact in the striatum brain area. A popular treatment for depression is to boost the levels of 5-HT, which provides compelling evidence for 5-HT involvement in depression. However the DA system may also be involved because it is known to be impor tant to emotion and motivation. Dr. Zhou proposes to conduct experiments to elucidate how these two systems interact, and to expand our knowledge of the dynamic nature of the DA profile in the brain. Findings from these experiments should advance our understanding of depression and schizophrenia. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS AREAS\Schizophrenia/Unipolar\Pharmacology |
