J. Julius Zhu, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of University of Virginia, will study how functional neuronal connections are established in hippocampal neurons soon after birth. It is believed that disruption of this developmental process may lead to disorders such as schizophrenia. Some of the most important connections between neurons include glutamate and GABA neurons, which are both established early in development. This work may therefore lead to a better understanding of how developmental abnormalities can contribute to the development of schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
