Jeffrey M. Zigman, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, will further examine ghrelin’s (a hormone produced in the stomach that triggers the “hunger signal,), interaction with midbrain dopaminergic circuitry as a means of investigating its influence on mood and on the acquisition of addictive substance and natural rewards, such as food. Dr. Zigman will accomplish this via unique mouse models that allow cell-specific manipulation of ghrelin signaling. Results of this study could provide novel strategies to treat depression, substance abuse and obesity. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS\Anxiety Disorders/Mood Disorders\Substance Disorders |
