Lisa T. Eyler Zorrilla, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of VA San Diego Healthcare System (VA), will conduct a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of augmentation of antipsychotic treatment with the medication donepezil (Aricept). Forty patients with schizophrenia will receive either deonepezil or a placebo and will be assessed at baseline and at 12 weeks with measures of symptoms, cognition, and daily functioning. A subset of patients and controls will receive functional magnetic resonance imaging. It is hypothesized that donezepil will improve symptoms, cognition, and functioning, and that changes in functional brain activity will predict improvement in these clinical correlates. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia\Geriatric |
