Paul Greengard, Ph.D.

Dr. Greengard’s interests have ranged from basic neural explorations to the development of therapeutic agents for neurological and psychiatric diseases. The goal of his research is to understand the molecular basis of communication between neurons in the mammalian brain, elucidate the molecular defects responsible for various neurological and psychiatric disorders and determine the molecular mechanisms by which neuro- and psychoactive drugs produce their pharmacological actions. His groundbreaking work on signal transduction in the nervous system was recognized in 2000 with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (shared with Arvid Carsson and Eric Kandel). Dr. Greengard is collaborating in a study to identify all expressed genes in individual cell types that have been implicated in schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders.

Dr. Greengard received his Ph.D. in biophysics from The Johns Hopkins University. Prior to joining the Rockefeller University, he was Director of Biochemical Research at the Geigy Research Laboratories and a Professor of Pharmacology and Psychiatry at Yale University. Since 1995, he has directed the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Disease Research at Rockefeller.
